20 MPH LIMITS BEING INTRODUCED IN UPPER NORWOOD THIS SUMMER
The new 20 mph limits are to be introduced into Upper Norwood this summer, a Croydon council spokesman told News From Crystal Palace.
Final plans for the phase one speed limits in parts of South Norwood, Selhurst, Bensham Manor, Thornton Heath and Upper Norwood are now underway, and the first new signs are due to be installed by the end of June.
In July last year the council announced that 52.5% of respondents were in favour of reduced speed limits in this area. Out of the 2,320 responses, 46.4% were opposed to and 1.1pc were undecided.
Croydon’s proposals for a second phase of 20mph speed limits have been given the green light by residents in the north-east of the borough.
Residential streets in parts of Addiscombe, Ashburton, Woodside, Shirley, Heathfield, Fairfield, and parts of Selhurst and South Norwood will benefit from the new limit, but major through-roads will not be affected.
A council spokesman said: “In coming to its decision, the council took into account those residents’ views that were expressed during the consultation process, which saw a 52 to 48 percentage majority in favour of the scheme’s introduction.
Croydon’s cabinet member for transport and environment Cllr Stuart King said: “This is a popular policy when you speak to residents on the doorstep or at the school gate.
“People recognise that the use of extensive 20mph speed limits helps reduce the risk of life-changing injuries or fatalities, as well as cutting congestion and pollution levels, and discouraging dangerous rat-running in quieter streets.
“I am delighted we are fulfilling our election manifesto and proceeding with this long-needed improvement which will make our streets safer and more pleasant places to live.”
Many residents gave detailed feedback, and all comments will be analysed carefully as part of the formal approval process that now has to be carried out through the council’s traffic management committee before phase two can be started. (Source: Croydon council press release)
