20MPH SPEED LIMIT PROPOSALS FOR CRYSTAL PALACE LAUNCHED – “We’ll only introduce these limits if people want them” – councillor
Residents in the Croydon part of Crystal Palace and other parts of the north of the borough are being asked if they want their roads to get 20mph limits under a council consultation launched this week.
Streets in parts of Crystal palace, South Norwood, Selhurst, Bensham Manor and Thornton Heath – except major through roads – will get the new limit if enough local people back the plans.
Residents, businesses and local groups have until 24 June to give their feedback. The plans do not include Transport for London red routes like London Road or busy through roads such as Beulah Hill or Whitehorse Lane, explained a council spokesman.
“The council’s cabinet decided in March to ask people across the borough if they want the new speed limits, and the north is being consulted first before the council asks people in other areas of Croydon from next year.
“Extensive 20mph limits reduce the risk of accidents, cut congestion and pollution levels, encourage less car use and discourage rat-running in quieter streets.
“If the consultation finds enough locals want a 20mph speed limit in their part of the borough, the council will start the formal process of implementing this.
“Once in place, the council would monitor traffic speeds within the 20mph roads. “If speeding remains an issue, options could include police enforcement and other traffic calming measures.”
Croydon’s cabinet member for transport and the environment Cllr Kathy Bee (who represents South Norwood ward) said: “We’ll only introduce these limits if people want them, so we need to hear what locals think after they’ve checked out the proposals.”
