Last week we had the second of our Plant to Plate project Cooking on a Budget demonstrations, thanks to Tayyaba from Simply Tay.  “Born to Pakistani parents, brought up in Germany  and living in South East London.  Best of East meets West – that is exactly what Simply Tay is about. A fusion of my Pakistani heritage in my cooking, and my German influenced upbringing in my baking.  Harmony!”  Tayyaba showed us how to make Alu Tikki, Masala Fish, Lentil Dhaal and Naan bread.  Find her at the market this week as guest lunch.

Guest stalls this week

Guest lunch – Simply Tay Tayyaba tells me she’s bringing “Spicy fish curry, cauliflower & potato curry, both served with daahl and rice. Oh…and samosas [hopefully lots of them!]”

Cheese – Blackwoods Cheese Company. BACK THIS WEEK Dave says “Liz will be on the stall with our ever improving washed Edmund Tews. We’ll only have a few so get in quick.” Blackwoods will be at the market every 4th Saturday. 

Gluten free/free from – Owl Kitchen Mel’s cooking up “Sweet – carrot cake, peanut butter squares, chocolate brownies, sticky ginger cake, orange & walnut flapjacks, coffee & walnut cake. Savoury – sausage rolls, mini quiche.  Vegan – courgette & banana cake. Dairy free – chocolate orange cake, beetroot torte (also sugar free).

Cakes – Brett and Bailey Here’s Joe’s cake-fest news “It’s still January, and you’ll need cake to cope. So don’t miss out on our stall full of delectable, seasonal baking – all made by hand in SE19.  Semlor season is back in full swing.  These cardamom-scented, cream and marzipan-filled buns are traditionally eaten in Sweden on Shrove Tuesday, but who wants to wait ’til then?

On the cake parade we’ll have our signature double carrot cake; apple & salted caramel cake; orange & almond cake; and the long-awaited returns of our pistachio & honey cake, and an extremely indulgent white chocolate & passion fruit cheesecake.

We’re also bringing a huge batch of our 73% Fairtrade dark chocolate brownies with pecans, white chocolate chunks & fleur de sel; spiced winter streusel cake; peanut butter bars; buttery oatmeal & raisin cookies; comfortingly generous wedges of our brand new shortbread treacle tart; and sticky buns as far as the eye can see. Missing the market this weekend? Preserves – Christine’s Creative Allsorts with “a selection of light pickled vegetables that are equally at home warming up a winter salad or adding a layer of flavor to a burger.  Also on the table are jams, marmalade, chutneys, piccalilli, condiments… and 50p bags of chocolate smothered cinder toffee!”

Tea & herbs – Gipsy Hill Herbs.  Sarah says “I’ll be there with my herbal teas and hot spiced apple & elderberry juice. Take a sachet home to make your own.”

Weekly Stalls

Lunch – Comfort & Joy. Andrea tells me “New this week – we have soya bean, pea and mint samosas, vegan Thai chickpea curry, and coriander chutney which goes really well with the curry.”

Vegetables, salad, herbs & fruit – Brambletye Fruit Farm, Brockmans & Wild Country Organics.

Brockmans – Jason says “Well 2016 has got off to a flyer thanks to you all.  We sold out of flower sprouts, spinach, kale and chard – I’ll send extra this week to keep up with the demand.  Look out for pre-cut squash segments [easier to manage than a whole one] and lots of muddy potatoes as well.

Plus – January king and savoy cabbages, leeks, 3 types of potato, parsnips, red & white cabbages, turnip bunches, 3 types of beetroot, lettuces, mixed salad, Jerusalem artichokes, blood oranges, exotic fruits, eggs and much more.”

Local growing project – Patchwork Farm (a Crystal Palace Transition Town project).

Fish – Veasey’s. Dan says “Hello, just a quick one today as we are having our large fridge re-done which is causing havoc in the shop. This week may be the last week for seabass from our boat NN733 because seemingly we have caught enough, and there will be a ban in force from next week for any under 10m boat. Whether this applies to the larger boats and even the factory ships I do not know but I would doubt so. The family run small boats always get dealt the worst hand.

So for this week Nick & Paul will have a bit of the following (plus lots of other goodies!) – whole Sussex bass £16.50kg, bass fillets £2.85/100g, large red gurnard £9.95kg, brill £18.50kg, Sussex cod fillet £16.50kg, whole south coast crab £9.50kg, pot caught lobster (available to order only), live Cornish mussels (perfect at the moment) £6kg.  Thank you!”

Want to volunteer on a local farm? Veryan from Sutton Community Farm says “Each week we distribute veg boxes to the community. These are mostly packed by a dedicated team of volunteers, and as we expand the box scheme, we’re going to need more and more hands on deck.  If you’d like to help, we currently pack on Thursdays 8:15 – 3pm (or part of that time, if that suits), with the option to stay into the afternoon to help with growing activities.
