SATURDAY DECEMBER 7th
An Evening with Carl Davis: Scoring ‘The Mutuals’ The Cinema Museum, London SE11 Saturday 7 December 2013 @ 19.30 (Doors 18.30) The Cinema Museum presents this unique event, a must-see for any movie buff, as Carl Davis talks about writing music for Charlie Chaplin’s silent masterpieces – the short movies known as ‘The Mutuals’. An Evening With Carl Davis will see Davis telling the story of Charlie’s early years thorough a selection of clips from ‘The Mutuals’ as well as a significant complete one, ‘The Adventurer’. The score will be drawn from Davis’s recording of the British Film Institute’s complete ‘Mutuals’. The Cinema Museum has an extraordinary link to the young Charlie Chaplin – it is housed in a former Victorian workhouse where the Chaplin family sought refuge several times. In 1916 Charlie Chaplin signed a contract to write, direct and star in 12 two-reelers for the Mutual Film Corporation. For the first time he had complete artistic control. These shorts, known forever as ‘The Mutuals’, drew for their themes on Chaplin’s own life experiences; a destitute childhood, the lure of the theatre, crossing the Atlantic as an immigrant, life in a silent film studio and dealing with fame and high society. Carl Davis (CBE) was born in New York in 1936 and came to the UK in 1960. Davis is a true music-maker and all-round musician, as both conductor and composer. He has changed the face of concerts as we know them, making classical music both accessible and varied and is a consummate showman and a first rate entertainer. His career has spanned many genres, from silent film performances to his popular themed concerts. He is perhaps most well known for his music for television including the series The World At War, BBC’s Pride & Prejudice and Cranford, ITV’s Goodnight Mr. Tom, and the award winning film, The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Davis has been a driving force behind reinventing the silent movie for a new generation. Following his work on Thames Television’s 1980 Hollywood – A Celebration of the Silent Film series, he created the classic and much-lauded five hour symphonic score for Abel Gance’s 1927 silent epic Napoleon. Since then, he has written or reconstructed scores for over 60 of the most famous pre-talkies such as Ben Hur and The Iron Mask, as well as many of Chaplin’s most famous movies such as The Kid, The Gold Rush and City Lights which have been performed all over the world. If you love cinema…London’s Cinema Museum is devoted to keeping alive the spirit of cinema from the days before the multiplex. Set in historic surroundings in Kennington, close to the Elephant & Castle, the Cinema Museum houses a unique collection of artefacts, memorabilia and equipment that preserves the history and grandeur of cinema from the 1890s to the present day. They are open for visits from anyone with an interest in the cinema, host programmes of ticketed events, work with educational institutions on joint projects and with film archives on preservation activities and make items from the collection available on loan to other institutions for exhibition. The Cinema Museum is a Registered Charity and it receives no public funding. Advance tickets may be purchased from WeGotTickets (www.wegottickets.com/ location/4966), or direct from the Museum on 020 7840 2200 (office hours) The Cinema Museum, 2 Dugard Way (off Renfrew Road), London, SE11 4TH

STEVE KNIGHTLEY is appearing at the Stanley halls, South Norwood hill, London SE25
The PR blurb says: His group ‘Show of Hands’ have been described by no less than Peter Gabriel as “one of the great English bands.” Yet in 2014 Singer songwriter, Steve Knightley will be taking a break from city theatres and major concert stages in order to bring his songs to village halls and community venues throughout the land.
Steve’s solo Grow Your Own Gig tour, will find him in out-of-the-way locations from Cornwall to the Borders as he returns to the rural roots of his music. “Having written so many songs over the years about people who live and work in the countryside and the day to day issues they face – it will be great to actually perform them in their spiritual homes”
Recent converts to his music include BBC rural affairs corespondent Tom Heap, who said Steve’s anthem ‘Country Life’ said “more in three minutes than I could in a 45 minute programme!” Jeremy Vine, Andrew Marr, Simon Mayo and historian Michael Wood have also recently featured his cutting edge songs on their shows.
