May 15th 2014 West Norwood – a place of change
Norwood Society member, Alun Thomas will talk about the historical development of the centre of West Norwood over time including some of the businesses there.
June 19th 2014 The Concrete Church & the Bevingtons
Norwood Society Chairman, Richard Lines will introduce us to this pioneering building in Waldegrave Road and the closely connected Bevington family who are also associated with Bermondsey.
September 18th 2014 Local War Memorials
As part of our contribution to Lambeth’s Heritage Month and the theme of W.W.1., Norwood Society member Jerry Green will introduce us to the memorials of the area and some of the people who are remembered on them.
October 16th 2014 From Fire Station to Theatre
Bob Callender of the South London Theatre Centre will relate the history of West Norwood’s old fire station, the fire service and the transformation in to the Theatre Centre.
November 20th 2014 Lambeth’s Archives
Zoe Darani, archivist, from Lambeth Archives will introduce us to the vast wealth of material about Norwood and the Borough of Lambeth which are held in the Archives.
December 18th 2014 Party Night
Join us to celebrate the last year’s meetings and a chance to revisit some of the items of interest in early copies of the Norwood Review.

Fiona will be teaching patchwork and quilting. Work will be done by hand, but if you have a PAT-tested sewing machine you may bring this along. Fiona’s sewing machine may be used on occasion, when required. Refreshments will be served.

Refreshments will be served.

DULWICH PICTURE GALLERY
Dulwich Picture Gallery is the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery, founded in 1811 and designed by Regency architect Sir John Soane. It houses one of the finest collections of Old Masters in the country, especially rich in French, Italian and Spanish Baroque paintings and in British portraits from the Tudor period to the 19th century. HORNIMAN MUSEUM AND GARDENS

The Horniman Museum and Gardens opened in 1901 as a gift to the people in perpetuity from tea trader and philanthropist Frederick John Horniman, to ‘bring the world to Forest Hill’. Today theHorniman has a collection of 350,000 objects, specimens and artefacts from around the world. Its galleries include natural history, anthropology, music and an acclaimed aquarium. Indoor exhibits link to the award-winning display gardens – from food and dye gardens to an interactive sound garden – set among 16 acres of beautiful, green space offering spectacular views across London. Our visitors come time and again to participate in our exciting range of events and activities, sample the tasty delights from our popular cafe, and shop for interesting gifts in our gift shop. We also make our spaces available for hire including our stunning Grade II listed Victorian Conservatory built in 1894 and newly built Gardens Pavilion.

Extremes

Calling all budding explorers! Come on an expedition to see how animals and plants survive in extreme heat, cold, dryness and permanent darkness or with little oxygen in our new family friendly exhibition Extremes.
See some of the animals that live in these environments, watch films that make you shiver, try to keep up with the drinking speed of a camel, feel the air-conditioning inside the ostrich’s beak, or see how much fat you have compared with a seal.
Extremes mixes hands-on experiences including games and experiments, with films and taxidermy animal specimens. This exhibition is in three languages – English, Spanish and French.

At Home With Music
Visit our new permanent display of keyboard instruments. This display explores domestic keyboards from the past five centuries that were brought into homes from parlours to palaces and brings together highlights of the keyboard instrument collections from the Horniman and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The display includes organs, harpsichords, pianos and clavichords and features rare and beautiful instruments.

Whisper of the Stars: Traditional Life in Arctic Siberia
Until September 7th
An exhibition of 40 stunning photographs portraying the traditional life of indigenous peoples across the remote Russian Arctic. Taken by British photographer Bryan Alexander, this series of striking images includes a herd of 1,000 reindeer being driven across the tundra in Khanty Mansiysk; the Northern Lights over a Nenets reindeer herders camp; and Khanty women in traditional dress in Pitlyar.

The Horniman Museum and Gardens is joint winner of the Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award 2013, run by Kids in Museums and judged by families.
The Horniman Museum and Gardens is core-funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and since 1990 has been governed by an independent charitable trust, registered charity no. 802725. The Horniman Museum and Gardens also receives funding from Arts Council England as one of its Major partner museums.
Opening times and admission. The Horniman Museum is open daily 10.30am-5.30pm, except 24 – 26 December, when it is closed. The Gardens open at 7.15am Monday to Saturday and 8.00am on Sunday and Bank Holidays, and close at sunset. Entry to the Museum and Gardens is free but charges apply for the Aquarium and some special exhibitions and events.
Access. The Museum and the Gardens are both wheelchair and pushchair friendly with accessible toilets. Limited on-site parking is available for disabled visitors – call 020 8699 1872.
Travel. The Horniman is situated on the South Circular Road (A205) in Forest Hill, London. It can be reached easily by train to Forest Hill from Highbury and Islington, Whitechapel and Canada Water (on the London Overground line), London Bridge (13 minutes), London Victoria, Clapham Junction and East Croydon, and by local buses (176, 185, 356, P4).
