FRIENDS OF CARNEGIE LIBRARY WINTER FAIR
December 3rd
Since 1999 the Friends of Carnegie Library have held an annual Winter Fair. Over the years it became one of the most popular events in the Herne Hill calendar. With the library closed we cannot stage a full-scale fair; but we will hold a modified ‘Spirit of Libraries’ event to afford some seasonal cheer and remind everyone we are still here.
Come along on Saturday 3 December from 11.00–3.00 at Herne Hill United Church Hall and Garden Room, Red Post Hill. There will of course be our famous tea & cake stall, community stalls, craft stalls, a raffle and other delights.
Reunite with old friends and meet new ones for a true community celebration. Make a resolution to return to the library next year, reviving the Winter Fair and all activities. (Source: Friends of Carnegie Library)

UPPER NORWOOD LIBRARY BOOK CLUB
“Our next meeting will take place on Saturday 10th December at the slightly earlier time of 2pm, when we shall be discussing The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken. Funnily enough, I did my first class visit from a Year 5 class last Wednesday and had selected a chapter from Coraline by Neil Gaiman to read to the students; however, as soon as they entered the Junior Library and saw the display of books I had put on a table, they honed in The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and pleaded to have it read to them! Turns out they’re reading it too – and loving it! I told them that the UNL Book Club was reading it at the same time; how reading connects us all!”

A CHRISTMAS CAROL WITH THE LONDON MOZART PLAYERS
On Friday 16th December at 7.00pm, the world-renowned chamber orchestra the London Mozart Players will holding a Christmas extravaganza concert at St John the Evangelist – Upper Norwood, in aid of Barnardo’s.
Suitable for the whole family, join the orchestra in the countdown to Christmas for an evening of carols, choirs and Christmas commissions.
Alongside a programme featuring Vivaldi’s Winter from the Four Seasons and Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, there will be performances of Christmas classics including Sleigh Ride and Walking in the Air.
The LMP will also perform a specially commissioned Christmas piece Tu scendi dalle stele (a fantasia on a Neapolitan carol), for solo trumpet and strings written by the British composer Peter Longworth.
The Central Band of The Royal British Legion has also recently taken up residence at St John the Evangelist and will be performing a selection of popular Christmas Melodies including Winter Wonderland and White Christmas.

All profits generated from this concert will go towards Barnardo’s and The Triangle, its centre in Upper Norwood, which was developed to appeal to all local families while also supporting the most vulnerable children and young people in the area.
Behind this concert is a project that will bring together many different sections of the Croydon community. In the lead up to Christmas, composer Peter Longworth will be visiting local Croydon schools to assist the children in composing their own Christmas carols. The children will then perform these carols in local care homes, with the project culminating in a performance at this concert.
In July 2016, LMP relocated their offices to St John the Evangelist in Upper Norwood to become an orchestra embedded within a living community with a wide ranging education and community engagement programme sponsored by Regent Land & Developments.
Since arriving, the orchestra have organised two sell-out community concerts at their new home – with their launch event in October 2016 attracting an audience of almost 600 people.
The LMP are inviting young trebles from the borough of Croydon to audition to perform Howard Blake’s ‘Walking in the Air’ with the orchestra and the opening unaccompanied verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’.
