FREE NHS HEALTH CHECKS FOR CROYDON’S OVER-40’s
Residents of Croydon over the age of 40 are being reminded that they can enjoy the benefits of a free NHS health check which could detect the early signs of preventable problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, dementia and stroke.
Latest Public Health England (PHE) figures (published 11 June) show that a growing number of people in the borough are booking an NHS health check, with nearly 5,000 taking advantage of the offer last year. In total, almost a quarter of a million Londoners had a health check.
Croydon council, which leads the NHS health check programme locally, are encouraging even more residents to book an appointment with a borough GP, pharmacy or outreach service where the health check is available.
Most people aged between 40 and 74 are entitled to receive an NHS Health Check. Those with pre-existing conditions may not be eligible because they should already be under the care of their GP. People may also be entitled to a check in Croydon if they do not live in the borough, but are registered with a local GP.
The check usually takes no longer than 30 minutes, with results known immediately, along with advice on how to make simple lifestyle changes, such as eating healthily and being more active, both of which can lower the risk of developing serious, but preventable conditions.
Croydon’s cabinet member for families, health and social care Cllr Louisa Woodley says: “Too many people in Croydon are classed as overweight or obese, and are suffering from high blood pressure, so the benefits of having an NHS Health Check, and getting an early diagnosis for potential health problems are huge.
“The health check gives residents an opportunity to take control of their own health. While it’s encouraging to know that so many people have booked an appointment to have one, we now want to ensure that even more take up this offer.
“We’re working with local GPs and pharmacies to encourage more of them to come on board and provide this vital health service to their communities.”

FINDING OUT WHAT THE COMMUNITY THINKS
Food banks and advice services, a residents’ group, families and shoppers are among those who will be visited during a New Addington walkabout by leading council and police figures on Tuesday 8 September.
One of a series, the walkabouts aim to give people the chance to share their concerns and to learn how the council and police may be able to help them, said a Croydon council spokeswoman.
Walkabouts have already taken place in central Croydon, London Road, the Latham’s Way traveller site and Old Town. Future walkabouts will focus on the borough’s district centres not already visited. (Source: Croydon council press release.)
