Green candidate for London Mayor, Sian Berry, turned out yesterday (Mar 31) to support library users fighting to stop their well-used free library – the Carnegie at Herne Hill, Lambeth – being turned into a fee-charging gym at huge expense by Lambeth council.
Jeff Doorn, chairman of the Friends of Carnegie Library, says: “We wrote to all the Mayoral candidates. “Sian was the only one who replied and who found time to come and meet us.
“The Greens came out in force to demonstrate support for the library. “Friends also came along.
“Sian was very responsive. “She said Camden had been forced by public pressure to keep libraries open; so the same should happen here.
“We will certainly fight on. Lambeth’s gym idea is costing millions. Keeping all 10 libraries running, as people want, would cost less.”

Upper Norwood Library campaigner has responded angrily to an email from Labour’s Mayoral hopeful Sadiq Khan asking for his help.
In a blistering broadside Mr Gibson, chairman of the Upper Norwood Library Campaign, has told Mr Khan: “Since you have been totally silent on Lambeth Labour gutting its library service and I’ve spent the night in an occupation of the Carnegie Library in Herne Hill to defend communities and community infrastructure, I rather think not.
“As a member of the Labour party and with a library full of Labour party card carrying members disgusted by a Labour council that doesn’t listen to its residents or its staff that is hell bent on the destruction of the communities of Lambeth and the institutions and homes they cherish I think you have a cheek to ask.”
