GREENWICH LEISURE BID TO SELL OFF HEALTH HYDRO FOR FLATS (in Swindon)
Greenwich Leisure – the group which wants to turn the Carnegie library in Herne Hill into a gym – are trying to turn part of a health hydro in Swindon which they took over into flats.
News of the possible Swindon sell-off comes with Lambeth council’s planning committee set to rubberstamp the hugely controversial plans to allow Greenwich Leisure to turn the Carnegie library at Herne Hill into a glorified gym at its meeting on Tuesday January 17th.
The Swindon move will. without doubt, cause further anxiety and stress to those campaigning to keep the Carnegie building as a library.
As previously reported two groups, one formed by the Friends of Carnegie library, and the other – which is allied to a secretive group which includes two former Labour councilors and the partner of a former Lambeth council Labour leader – are vying to take control of the library.
Lambeth council have publicly said the asset transfer submissions will be independently assessed over the coming months.
But News From Crystal Palace can reveal that one person who made a Freedom of Information request to Lambeth regarding the Carnegie library was told by the council: “We note that information is already published where relevant via http.carnegiehernehill.org.uk” – the website address for the secretive Labour group.
Note: The agenda for the planning meeting on January 17th is due to appear on the council’s website (lambeth.gov meetings) next Tuesday.
