CONCERT BOWL – A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The decision to scrap concerts in the park’s bowl may strike a chord:
February 7th 2012: CRYSTAL PALACE GARDEN PARTY CANCELLED – SOUND STAGE ‘UNSOUND’
THE MASSIVE Crystal Palace Garden Party planned in Crystal Palace park for the weekend of June 23rd and 24th has been scrapped after it was discovered joists in the stage of the concert bowl had rotted away.
The event was due to play host to performances from acts such as Rick Wakeman, Hawkwind, Barclay James Harvest, Focus, The Strawbs and Curved Air on June 23 and The London Gala Symphony Orchestra on June 24.
Announcing the cancellation on the garden party’s website the organiser explained that when it was realised that a 1.5 ton scissor lift truck had to go on to the stage to erect sails and rigging some
cursory tests were made to the structure.
The cancellation of the two-day event led one Virtual Norwood poster – ChewderOde – to comment: “It might have been amusing to see the stage collapse and then the long blonde haired bearded creature known as Rick Wakeman disappear through a hole in the ground on what one would
assume was the beginning of his journey to the centre of the earth. “Boom Boom.”
CRYSTAL PALACE CORNER
From John Greatrex: In 2008 my company Great Exhibitions Ltd erected The Paxton Crystal Palace Corner. It consists of two full-size Paxton designed cast-iron Crystal Palace window frames set at 90 degrees to each other.
It is located on the hilltop of Crystal Palace Park in South London within the footprint of Paxton’s 1854-1936 reconstruction of his original Hyde Park 1851 Great Exhibition Greenhouse.
My company is intending to submit a planning application to extend the Corner in both directions using further Paxton designed Crystal Palace Parts. If you would like to be involved in this phase two of The Paxton Crystal Palace Reconstruction Project please contact me via:
