MAN GETS 12 YEARS FOR GUN AND DRUG OFFENCES
A 21-year-old man has been jailed for the possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and a string of other offences.
The man, from Hermitage Road, SE19, was also convicted of possession of ammunition, the supply of Class B drugs and possession of Class A drugs having previously pleaded not guilty at Kingston crown court.
He was sentenced to 12 years and eight months on Monday, 10 April.
On 5 September 2016, officers from the Met’s London Crime Squad attended the home address of one of the man’s associates on Field Way in New Addington to complete a firearms search warrant.
During the search of the house a loaded .22 calibre pistol was recovered and the woman who lived at the address was then arrested.
The man was stopped by armed officers nearby as he made his getaway and upon being searched was found to be in possession of four rounds of live ammunition, 25 wraps of cannabis and a quantity of suspected Class A drugs.
The ammunition was of the same calibre as the firearm and matched the ammunition found loaded within the gun.The man was subsequently charged and remanded in custody.
Det. Sgt Mark Gavin, from the London Crime Squad, said: “I am pleased with the sentence handed out today as this sends a clear message to those considering carrying a firearm and dealing drugs in London.
“He was fully aware that possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition is a criminal offence and he clearly had the intention of using it should the need arise.
“He was also involved in the supply of Class A and B drugs and it is clear that the firearm was insurance should he have had problems with rival criminals or anyone else for that matter. “He is clearly a dangerous criminal.
“Thanks to the hard work of my team and assistance from our colleagues in the firearms unit, we have been able to take another gun off the streets and prevent it being used in any further crimes.” (Source Met Police press release)
