OBJECTIONS TO SUPERDRUG WESTOW HILL SHOP PLANS – “They’ve just stuck a bog standard horrible Superdrug fascia on”
More than 20 objections have been lodged against Superdrug’s plans for a new shopfront and illuminated sign in the former Bar Twenty Five on Westow Hill – with some even objecting to Superdrug moving into the area.
Objections to the shopfront made to Lambeth council include:
Shopfront design and materials not in keeping with a conservation area.
Terrible. Not in keeping with the high street and shouldn’t be allowed considering this is a conservation area.
I strongly object to this bland generic shopfront proposal which contributes nothing to the streetscape and in my opinion will harm the conservation area. Also I would suggest that as the developer of the upper floors has presumably followed your (Lambeth’s) planning guidance in producing a ‘traditional’ building, it would make a mockery to insert such a non-traditional shopfront.
This is totally inappropriate in a conservation area. Utterly out of keeping with the existing building.
My objection is not to the business but to the proposed shop frontage and signage. Progression of current proposals will be to the detriment of the character of the Triangle area.
By virtue of its poor quality design, materials and overall appearance, the shop front as currently proposed fails to preserve or enhance the character of the Westow Hill Conservation Area contrary to Policy Q22 of the Lambeth Local Plan and the relevant tests set out in paragraph 131-134 of the NPPF. (National Planning Policy Framework).
Para 10.92 of the Lambeth Local Plan states the council will pay particular regard to ensuring that poor examples of alterations within conservation areas do not set precedents for future proposals and that any subsequent new works raise standards in terms of its design, detailing, materials and appearance.
No heritage statement has been provided by the applicant.
Shopfront design and materials not in keeping with a conservation area. Will be detrimental to look of Westow (Hill).
Objections to a proposed internally illuminated sign include:
I am not keen on the loss of a public garden (when part of a bar), and am opposed to the conversion of a wooden shop front to an all-glass front with an internally illuminated sign. I think this will slowly chip away at the individuality of the area.
We have several independent chemist shops in the area. They provide a wonderful service and are part of the charm living in Crystal Palace. They not only provide a valuable service, they know their clients and going in is a very comfortable, enjoyable experience. I feel very strongly that if a large chain was allowed to move in, almost next door to a very established and well used chemist, it would have a negative impact on their ability to run their businesses, and would impact on more satellite chemist businesses in the local area.
Terrible. Not in keeping with the high street and shouldn’t be allowed considering this is a conservation area.
Very poor quality shop signage definitely not in keeping with the local conservation area. There has been no attempt by the company to blend into the local area they’ve just stuck a bog standard horrible Superdrug fascia on.
Also if the store comes with a pharmacy counter then I don’t see the need. There are two pharmacies already witihin a short distance including one just a few doors up.
We don’t need a chemist when we already have two. I object to the frontage being changed and I object to the signs. This is not supportive of our area in any way.
The space can be used for the purpose that would be in use for a local community as there is a large space inside and a large outdoor garden. It used to be a place where all the local mums used to meet as it offered large playing area. Also, there is already a chemist a few doors down from the location and I am in favour of supporting local businesses.
This is a conservation area and should not have a plastic internally lit sign, it will ruin the appearance of the area. The look of the building should be preserved in a traditional manner.
I object to the front of the building being changed. The current frontage is wood and should be kept to keep the street from becoming an eyesore.
I also think that there is no need for a Superdrug in Crystal Palace. We have a very good chemist that has been here for years and this will have a negative effect for them.
Westow Hill and Westow Street already suffer from traffic congestion and a large business like Superdrug would cause even more congestion during their delivery times.
This is not in keeping with the area and if this is supposed to be a conservation area then goes against those regulations and therefore makes the whole system pointless.
The proposed shop front would stick out like a sore thumb in the area. The previous front had the door in the middle of the front and more glass panels with wood dividers, which broke it up nicely. The proposal is not in keeping with the conservation area with it’s vast expanse of glass, and illuminated signage.
My first objection is to another pharmacy opening on the triangle. There are already two – one independent and one in Sainsburys (which trades for over 100 hours a week). I doubt that the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment for the area could justify yet another pharmacy
Secondly this shop front should be made of timber. Croydon have successfully enforced this on other streets in the triangle and this is going a long way to ensure that the character and conservation efforts in the area are sustained
I would like to object (though I can’t access the drawings for this sign online – it says there aren’t any documents).
Internally illuminated signs are not in keeping with the area, especially as it is a conservation area. None of the neighbouring buildings have internally illuminated signs, as I believe this is (or was) not allowed.
BUT NOT EVERYONE……
Support the application. Crystal Palace needs large companies to come in and revive the area in terms of trade . Presently it is saturated with eateries and coffee bars It will definitely help the trade.
