SAVE THE SHIP CAMPAIGN FIRST MEETING TOMORROW NIGHT (TUESDAY)
The first meeting for the ‘Save the Ship’ campaign will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday August 18) at the Gold Coast, Portland Rd, South Norwood.
In a post on Virtual Norwood on Auguist 1st ‘Sunray’ says: “For those that haven’t been following the campaign, The Ship has been converted into flats without planning permission.
“Two applications have already been rejected and we’ve been successful in our nomination to make The Ship – at 55 South Norwood High Street – an Asset of Community Value.
“”At the meeting we will be discussing our plans to purchase the pub and open it as a community co-op pub.
“We are currently waiting on the developer to submit retrospective planning application with regards to putting the ground floor and basement back into use as a pub. This is going to be referred to the planning committee.
“Sadly Croydon council appetite for enforcement and the worry associated with appeal costs has resulted in the going down the retrospective planning route. “They have assured us if the developer hasn’t submitted plans in three months they will then be going down the enforcement route.”
UPDATE: An application was received by Croydon council on August 5th
Reference: 15/03553/ Alternative Reference:PP-04403691
Proposal:Refurbishment and use of ground and basement levels as public house; erection of roof extension to the rearmost addition and use of the rear and existing upper floors as 3 one bedroom and 2 two bedroom flats.
A statement on the ‘Save the Ship’ website says: “Croydon council advised the Save the Ship campaign that retrospective planning permission was being considered. “The council are working with the owners to ensure the basement and group floor are retained as a pub/restaurant.
“The Save the Ship campaign are seeking to negotiate a sale with the owner and raise enough money to ideally purchase the building. “However we would consider leasing the property.
“It would be great if you complete this survey https://surveyplanet…fe1f3045431ff3d as we are using it to help us develop our marketing plan to fundraise to purchase the Ship.”
