SOCIAL MEDIA CLAIMS AND COUNTER CLAIMS
In the wake of last week’s abandoned Lambeth council meeting there were claims and counter claims on social media involving heated exchanges between some Lambeth Labour councillors and others.
COUNCILLOR CALLED LIBRARIES CAMPAIGNERS ‘SCUM’ – SAVE OUR LIBRARIES
On Facebook Save Our Libraries – Lambeth said: Essentially, library campaigners were refused a delegation to to the council – so under the ‘delegation’ section of the agenda (where there weren’t any items) we asked to speak for two minutes.
This was again refused – we felt unreasonably – and the council asked that we be removed. When we refused to leave they abandoned the meeting. Very odd as we would have been in and out in a jiffy.
One councillor was calling Library campaigners ‘scum’ – it’s very hard to understand what these councillors feel their job is when they think people who want libraries are ‘scum’! Hope that makes sense of what happened on the night.
On Twitter:
Suzie Robertson [email protected]_Robs
Tonight’s @lambeth_council meeting closed as they refused to hear @defendtheten
Cllr Jane Edbrooke tweeted: “We have been prevented from talking about the proposed cuts to our schools. “Frustrating. “Disappointing.”
to which Michael J Keane responded: “Not sure what happened but some might say having your home demolished and a library closed is rather more disruptive.”
Andy Wilson [email protected]_andywilson (Lab Larkhall) May 19
@defendtheten no money being spent on Garden Bridge, not in our budget. Unlike rest of country we’re keeping all libraries open.
Defend The Ten replied: .@cllr_andywilson So ’10 now, 10 in future’? It wasn’t true then, it isn’t true today. 8 now, 7 in future.
Cllr Rezina Chowdhury (Lab, Streatham Hill): Here’s another reminder of the rabble who heckled tributes to Cllr Francis who passed away recently. #Lambeth
Disgraceful misogynistic behaviour by so called library protesters who have been so rude and disrespectful to our female mayor (CllrSaleha Jaffer).
(Editor’s note: News From Crystal Palace understands that if you listen to the audio version of the meeting, you won’t hear anything during the silence for the late Cllr Francis.).
Library Project [email protected]:
@RezinaChowdhury there was not a single misogynistic word spoken tonight that I heard, an absurd accusation .what actions exactly are you referring to that were misogynistic?
sarabredemear [email protected]:
perhaps shouting when a Lay-deeee is present is misogynist. Maybe us gurls just can’t cope??
Suzie Robertson [email protected]_Robs:
Misogynistic? How exactly?
And Architects for Social Housing – in a dig at a Labour councilor who criticized the Carnegie occupiers for drinking wine – had a go at another, Cllr Alex Bigham (Lab, Stockwell) and other councilors who went to a Tulse Hill hostelry after the abandoned council meeting:
“While @alexbigham and his Progress pals knock back wine, 5000 Lambeth children go to bed in temporary accommodation.”
