STAND UP TO LAMBETH COUNCIL Mass march planned for October 1st
On 1st October 2016, the people of Lambeth will be marching from Windrush Square in Brixton to Clapham Common to protest the destruction of services, homes, jobs and the rights of residents.
Marchers should aim to join the rally in Windrush Square (opposite Lambeth town hall, Brixton) at 12 noon, the aim being to set off for Clapham Common by approximately 1pm.
This is a PEACEFUL MARCH and families and children are welcome. Bring refreshments etc. for a big family picnic on the common.
All Lambeth residents are invited, and residents from surrounding boroughs as well as members of all groups who have a grievance with Lambeth council, are welcome to come and join us and support us.
We will all be STANDING UP ……. to Lambeth. (Source: Stand up to Lambeth council Facebook group which has more than 300 members.) Among Facebook posts on the planned march are:
Lynley Oram: Fed up with them not funding the library properly (and it really wasn’t a lot! The savings probably don’t even cover a couple of the consultants they tend to hire). Tired of long standing businesses shoved out? Cross about Central Hill Estate? Angry about the state of the parks? Come say something!
Alex Klaushofer: I think this is a good idea – is it a first to hold a demo organised about a council, rather than a specific issue?
Lambeth have not only been disregarding the will of the community on libraries and housing, their councillors have been actively insulting voters on social media and suppressing participation in meetings. In short, there’s a real problem with Lambeth Council, their attitude and political culture.
Lynley Oram That’s true it might be! I am really hoping I’m not working that day so I can go. I am astounded at the decisions that have been made. There are amazing councillors on Lambeth too. People who go above and beyond. But the actual administration of council policies seems beyond comprehension.
