]]>The win was announced at a ceremony at the Telegraph’s offices in Buckingham Palace Road, London.
The shortlisted venues were picked in July by a panel of expert judges and a team of family judges visited each venue anonymously over the summer holidays to choose the winner.
Janet Vitmayer, Director of the Horniman Museum and Gardens, said: ‘We welcome thousands of families each year, and our aim is not only to make their visits rich and enjoyable, but also to help foster a lifelong love of the arts and culture in our younger visitors.
“To be recognised by families themselves for this award is the greatest prize.’

FOODBANK’S THANKS
NORWOOD FOODBANK have thanked the people of Upper Norwood for their support of Foodbank
“Through supermarket collections in September we collected 1.5 tonnes food and in October 1.4 tonnes slightly down because of a shortage of volunteers but still amazing.
“We are next at Sainsbury’s (Westow Street, Upper Norwood) on Saturday December 14th and more volunteers would be great, “Please see our website for details.”
“So the support the local community give is greatly appreciated and people or groups should get in touch if they would like to consider making donations at other times.”

TRAINEE COMMUNITY ORGANISERS WANTED AT ST HUGH’S
St Hugh’s ccmmunity centre in SE20 is joining the national community organisers programme and is hosting two trainee organisers in SE20 from 2014.
The community organisers are individuals who will work in the community around SE20 to bring people together, listen to their ideas, build networks and support people to tackle the local issues which are important to them.
“COs do not bring a message or an agenda. “Instead they listen to people actively, systematically, one-to-one and in groups, building trust, respect and relationships.
“Their role is to explore the loves, concerns, hopes and visions of local people, to ignite the impulse to act, and to support that action to be as effective as it can be. “This is localism in action, at its very best.
We are passionate about our community and are open to doing things differently.
We have two fixed term contracts for Trainee Community Organisers, at £8.55/hour.
Drop-in info session at St Hugh’s Community Centre, 42 Castledine Road, SE20 on Saturday 2nd November 1-2pm.

CROYDON COMMISSION ON STREET LITTER
In a letter to NFCP Cllr Wayne Lawlor (Lab South Norwood) says “Many residents across Croydon North are very unhappy with the state of Croydon’s streets. “People complain that the streets are visibly dirty and that the refuse collection and street cleaning services provided by the council are not meeting their expectations.
“The Croydon North Streets Commission is an independent investigation into the state of Croydon’s streets, which will gather the views of local residents and businesses about waste and street cleaning services across the borough.
“Once evidence has been gathered, the commission will present its recommendations for improving these services to the council.
“Services the commission will review include street cleaning, refuse collection, bulky items disposal, fly tipping, abandoned vehicles and commercial waste.
“We want to get as many people as possible along to provide evidence, views and suggestions about the state of the streets in Croydon North.

]]>The post VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR PARK SURVEY…. appeared first on News from Crystal Palace - News & stories from the fresh air suburb - Crystal Palace, London SE19.
]]>Bromley council are currently in the process of co-ordinating the submission of a first round application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) under their Parks for People programme. The programme supports regeneration projects and activities in parks throughout the UK.
As part of this first round application a Park User Survey needs to be completed. The Survey will be used to establish current park user numbers. In addition the community stakeholder group will gather data on who uses the park, why they visit the park and where they have come from.
“The Survey data will also be used to project park user numbers after the Heritage Lottery Fund investment has been made” say the group. “This will enable us to consider how we widen the visitor base of Crystal Palace park.” A more involved consultation period will begin should this HLF grant be awarded. The purpose of the consultation will be to seek community views on the proposed improvements.
The community stakeholder group, along with other local community groups, are planning on running two main volunteering sessions on each day. The morning session starts at 8.30 am and finishes at 1 pm and the afternoon session starts at 12.30 pm and finishes at 5 pm.
“Each session will start with a briefing held at the Information Centre (near the Penge Gate of the park) where we will give you all the information and equipment you need to help complete the Survey. “Please note that you do not have to volunteer for the whole morning or afternoon session but we are asking that volunteers give a minimum of two hours.
If you are interested in helping out or would simply like some more information about the survey please contact: Crystal Palace Park CSG
If you would like any further information on the HLF application please contact [email protected]
…AND INFORMATION CENTRE
Meanwhile the Friends of Crystal Palace Park are looking for volunteers to staff the information centre.
In a message to members the Friends say: “As you’ll be aware, the Rangers are no longer based in the park, and so the information centre is no longer open to the public. “We managed to keep it open last summer purely with volunteers and are keen to do so again.
“We don’t have quite enough willing hands yet, to keep it open every weekend, so please get in touch if you are able to help. “You just need to be available for a couple of hours on a Saturday or Sunday, and we’ll make sure you aren’t left on your own, or without support.”
The Friends are holding a regular volunteering session this Sunday (June 9th) from 2-4pm. Meet as usual, by the information centre opposite the cafe, at the lower entrance to the park.

MOTORSPORT AT THE PALACE
29 May 2013: Under glorious sunshine, a record crowd of over 8,000 people enjoyed two fantastic days of racing at Motorsport at the Palace. Race fans and casual visitors alike witnessed some spectacular on-track action, which saw the previous lap record smashed and class records tumble across the board. Existing record holder Gary Thomas, driving a Force PT, shaved almost a second off his previous best time, powering his way around the course in just 32.87 seconds.
Event organiser, Sevenoaks and District Motor Club, was again delighted to support local charities, Royal London Society for Blind People and St Christopher’s Hospice. This year, Motorsport at the Palace raised over £3,500 for these charities, taking the overall total donated to almost £15,000. For more information, please visit www.motorsportatthepalace.co.uk.
