A MASTERS STUDENT is putting together a community audio trail of memories of Crystal Palace park.
Sarah Glover is nearly at the end of a Masters in Museums and Galleries in Education and has written about Crystal Palace for a couple of pieces of coursework.
“I am passionate about recording the history of the park as it is remembered now, through the words of people who work in the park as well as those who visit it” says Sarah..
“I’m collecting memories, stories, poetry and songs about the park to create a community audio trail.
“I have quite a tight deadline for the course project – July 1st – and so may create a short trail for the purposes of the coursework, but wish to continue recording in my own time to create a complete audio trail if possible.
“I would love to hear from anyone who would like to share any of the above” says Sarah, an MA student at the Institute of Education, London.
“I have lived locally for a few years and have always had a remote connection with the park due to the fact that my late Grandma grew up in the area and told me of how she saw the Crystal Palace on fire”

PAXTON ARMS COULD FOLLOW SAME ‘FATE’ AS THE THICKET TAVERN
THE PAXTON ARMS on Anerley Hill could be the next ‘local’ to be turned into a block of flats following a successful conversion of the nearby Thicket Tavern on Anerley Road. If the plans are approved it would mean there would be no pub between the Grape and Grain at the top of Anerley Hill, and the Anerley Arms in Ridsdale Road (off Anerley Road) by Anerley station.
Plans have been submitted to Bromley council to convert the pub into three one-bedroom and four two-bedroom flats with construction of a mansard roof, roof terrace, elevational alterations and conversion into part class A1 retail in basement and ground floor,
The agents say in their application: “The existing building is in a poor state of repair and in need of refurbishment. “Some parts of the site have recently suffered from fly tipping thereby creating a nuisance and an environmental hazard. “The existing building was in use up to April 11th 2013 but is now no longer in use and boarded up. “

*A RECEPTION to launch an art exhibition in the Thicket Tavern attracted scores of people. Work on the former pub, which has a new mansard roof, included removing FIFTEEN layers of paint to reveal the building’s original Victorian wall tiles.

IF YOU have any unwanted vegetables or herbs then Crystal Palace Transition Town’s Patchwork Farm would like to hear from you!
The Farm runs a stall at the Transition Town’s food market being held every Saturday at the bottom of Haynes Lane, off Westow Street.
One recent donation was three kilos of spinach, Patchwork Farm’s Clare Goff told last week’s launch of Rob Hopkins book ‘The Power of just doing Stuff” at the Grape and Grain, Anerley Hill. Other items sold have included ginger, wild garlic and ground elder.
The Patchwork Farm idea began about seven weeks ago with just five or six separate sites including window boxes and has now grown to about 30, Clare added.
CINEMA RUMOUR SQUASHED
A RUMOUR that plans to turn Nettlefold Hall in West Norwood into a cinema had been scrapped has been heartily rebuffed by Lambeth council.
A council spokesman said: “The council remains firmly committed to a new library, independent cinema and bar in Nettlefold Hall, which will complement the new £14.2million leisure centre in Norwood Hall, work on which is well under way and due to be finished for an opening in spring next year. “Both centres will be fantastic additions to West Norwood and we’re glad to be getting on with the job.” Squatters who were in Nettlefold hall have now gone, the spokesman added.
The rumour appeared on a local blog site.

More than a dozen volunteers turned up on Saturday to clear rubbish and do battle with a jungle of undergrowth that had taken hold of the Upper Norwood Joint Library car park.
The initiative was led by Anna Kostyrina of Crystal Palace Transition Town’s (CPTT) Palace ‘Pick Up’ Initiative and CPTT steering group member and Upper Norwood Library Trust member Robert Gibson. “A fantastic amount was achieved by the community who rallied round to sort out the library car park” said Mr Gibson.
“I would like to pay tribute to everybody involved and would particularly like to thank Neville De Souza managing director of local developer Lightbox, who not only volunteered but has promised further assistance.
“The next step is to create a small garden with seating and flower beds. “Roman philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero said: ‘If you have a garden and a library you have everything you need.’”
The library’s first ‘Partnership work in the community’ project ‘Joseph Paxton and his amazing Crystal Palace’ with the drama group at Virgo Fidelis Prep School on Central Hill attracted an audience of between 70 and 90 people. The performance of the play by John Greatrex at the school raised £150.
HARRIET RAISES £59 FOR CHILDRENS’ HOSPICE
Haynes Lane ‘marketeer’ Harriet Press raised £59 – after various ‘one-off’ expenses - for the Demelza childrens hospice with her Utopia Crystals holistic event at the Phoenix centre, Westow Street on Saturday June 8th and is now planning a similar event for Saturday July 27th, again at the Phoenix, (2pm to 7pm) to raise more funds for Demelza. Harriet already has an amazing £600 in pledges for her sponsored parachute jump for the children’s hospice on August 25th.
