POP-UP PARTY AND FOLK OF THE WOOD

POP-UP PARTY

A NEW photography exhibition featuring works by Jackie King opens at The Jay at the bottom of Coopers Yard off Westow Hill (between Kinleigh Folkard and Hayward’s offices and Iceland’s store) on Thursday.

The show is in two parts, the first as you enter is a set of 11 images in circular format. In her ‘artist statement Jackie says: “This series of 11 photographs is concerned with the globalisation of culture, especially American consumerism.
“The photographs interweave imagery of recognisable consumer icons within urban environments such as Walmart, Pizza Hut and McDonalds with flora and fauna. These juxtapositions serve to question what we consider our cultural realities to be.
“The circular format of the photograph is used as a device to underline that culture is a construction and references can also be drawn from 19th century portraiture, particularly Julia Margaret Cameron and the Galerie Contemporaire who captured artistic, literary and political figures celebrated in their time.
“Here in place of these figures, are the global brands of our society which are elevated and celebrated through an aspirational idealism. “By using the ‘peep hole’ of the circle construct to concentrate the gaze here it has been my hope to create a focus on the elements of our subconscious lifestyles. “The boundary of the circle is dissected by a butterfly motif, representing optimism for a brighter conscience awakening and understanding of the powers at play.”
Jackie says the second part is her interpretation of the vast areas of built up cornucopia or wide open space of America juxtaposed against a sense of what’s missing and is a “work in progress “
Opening times are Thursday 6pm-9pm, Friday, Saturday, Sunday 10am – 6pm. and if there is anything else I can send through or any other information you require, please let me know, my number is 07754 757716,
